W8s 4-0 Broxbourne

It’s the end of the season for the rebranded W8s, who finished with another win v Broxbourne and a respectable third place in whatever league they play in. There has been plenty to celebrate all season, and celebrate they did, sometimes in the Speckled Hen, with milk. So much so that their photos are now up behind the bar.

There’s one member of the team who especially likes a drink, but is also a hard-working business lady, coffee aficionado, keen tourist and brain-box scientist. She has never been spotted with a hockey stick but it doesn’t stop her hanging out with the W8s every Saturday. Meet Daisy.

Sarah gets to keep Daisy all summer, for being a tremendous sweeper, top captain and the all-round favourite person of the W8s. Heidi kept her for one hour, for being player of the match yesterday, after her cameo appearance at an attacking short corner and roofing the ball into the back of the net. More on that later… At the club dinner, goal-hanger Fi was awarded top goalscorer of the club. There is an advantage to having a short-sighted captain and the same build and hair colour as two of the other forwards, so thanks to all the silver sisters for possibly scoring some of those 29 goals she got the credit for.

Back to the Broxbourne match: due to Lou’s ill-timed skiing holiday, versatile Maya stepped into the centre midfield position with aplomb - which means she’s now played in pretty much every position on the pitch this season except GK - and she scored a beauty of a goal from the top of the D. Anna (or was it Fi?) followed with a second goal, and the third goal was after the whistle for half time, when all the defenders came to help out and ended up stealing some well-deserved glory of their own. In the second half, Mary nudged in another short corner goal, from what used to be known as a Fi-Lou special, but has now been rebranded as a Fi-Anna special.

So much for the goals. At the other end of the pitch, Jackie “forgot” her Hippocratic oath when she decided to dislodge a Broxbourne teenager’s new braces (later claiming that she has taken no such oath and is therefore fully entitled to do as much harm as she likes). Sarah went one step further when she wounded her best friend in the place where the sun don’t shine, and notoriously litigious Elaine will no doubt be sending her the bill for some reconstructive surgery. There was a certain amount of shenanigans in the defensive D as a penalty stroke was awarded against us, which Becky saved using absolutely none of her skill, speed and strength.

So, with Daisy in hand and looking forward to next season in whatever league they play in, the W8s head off into the summer season, AKA the pickleball season. Keep well, and see you in September.
