There was no sign of storm Brendan as the sun shone at Lee Valley this weekend. St Albans 2s arrived ready for a battle against the on form and top of the league, Wapping.

A good relationship between the two teams promised a competitive match. Wapping started strong and disciplined and quickly demonstrated why they have won 12 out of 14 matches.

Wapping pressed from the outset with discipline and intent; winning a number of short corners, which were swiftly dealt with by St Albans. However, it was a third corner that caught St Albans Keeper Mel Insall guessing. Wapping were persistent with a disguised ball straight down the middle and third time lucky...1-0.

St Albans were out played in the first half and struggled to make the links they needed to pose a threat to the Wapping defence. Credit to the turbo engine of Donna Pringle and composure of Jo Martin in defence who bossed the ball out of the D; Wapping had their chances in open play but were not successful.

Another short corner saw the home side with another opportunity at goal. The call from Wapping's coach on the sideline was clear - stick to the plan and convert. Wapping responded and put away a well drilled routine.

St Albans continued to absorb the pressure and finished the half at 2-0. With a clear game plan to press and press with composure and patience, Wapping played well and deserved to be in front - top of the league for a reason.

St Albans held the home side to 0-0 in the second half. Wapping had their chances but a goal disallowed from some shaky umpiring and a strong corner defence denied conversion.

Wapping were ultimately stronger on the day and played very well - this can’t be argued and credit where credit is due to a team on the up.

Now time to reflect, relax and build confidence going into next Saturday’s home fixture Vs East London.
