On Saturday, St Albans made the short trip to local rivals Old Loughtonians. Saints were looking to make amends from their first defeat of the season the previous week away at Chichester.
The match started with the visitors soaking up all the pressure from the hosts with goalkeeper Iain Fraser being called into action on several occasions. With seemingly St Albans’s first attack of the game it was David Williams who opened the scoring with a neat deflection in front of the Loughts goalkeeper.
Williams added a second a few minutes later with an audacious finish from the base line, nestling the ball in the roof of the net. St Albans then began to dominate the game and their defensive structure left the hosts running out of ideas in the final quarter of the pitch.
A third goal was added when St Albans skipper Matt Davey converted a short corner with his trademark drag flick. Shortly after, Albans were reduced to 10 players when Ian Scanlon cynically brought down an attacker in an attempt to break down a Loughts counter attack. In the ensuing 10 minutes the Saints defence held firm and even added to the score line through Teague Marcano after, in a bizarre move, the hosts substituted their goalkeeper in order to try and outnumber the visitors outfield players.
Eventually the hosts got a breakthrough with their Polish international producing a bit of individual magic, but the Saints weren’t about to let a victory slip out of their grasp as one of their own internationals, Tariq Marcano, converted another short corner with a well placed drag flick into the top corner to make the final score line 5-1.
Paul Cooper was also present.
