St Albans Hockey Club is delighted to announce that South African Under 21 international Steve McManus will be joining the club for the 2016/17 season as a first team player and Club Development Member. As well as playing, Steve will coach Sunday mornings (colts training), Wednesday evenings (club training) and Saturday mornings (as a pool coach for mainstream teams within the club); he will also be pursuing coaching opportunities in local schools and specialist personal hockey training with juniors.
Steve McManus (aged 21) is a South Africa U21 international striker, with a Degree in Business Commerce in Finance from Varsity College, Durban. Steve has played Provincial hockey since age 14 outdoor, and indoor since age 16. He played for South Africa schools U16, South Africa U18 and now U21. He coached hockey (U16), football (U15), cricket (U14) at a Northwood High School, Durban in 2014; and U8, U9 and U10 cricket, hockey and rugby at Chelsea Preparatory High School, Durban in 2015. He has worked part-time as a finance and insurance manager for a second-hand car dealership.
St Albans HC Director of Hockey Andy Bowskill said: “Our club has long established connections to South African hockey and we look forward to welcoming Steve McManus, our latest recruit, to Oaklands. He is an exciting young talent and we hope he'll both strengthen the 1st team forward line but also make a great impact and enjoy his time at St Albans HC”. St Albans Head Coach, England and GB Men’s Manager Andy Halliday, said: “We are very excited to be able to attract another junior international player to Oaklands. Steve adds another important piece to the jigsaw as we strive for a return to the National League. As Head Coach, I look forward to working with Steve, he will be a valuable addition to our forward line". Steve McManus said: “I am delighted to be joining the St Albans hockey community. I hope to be a great asset to the club on the field, as well as prove my worth off the field. I believe that this partnership could be the start of greater things to come. I am extremely privileged and excited to be given this opportunity and cannot wait to get going.”
